Insurgent Movie Review and Discussion (Spoilers)

Insurgent was a disappointment. It was enjoyable to watch but after I thought about it, I realized how much I didn't like it. I'd give Insurgent an 8/10 as a movie but a 6/10 as a book-to-movie adaptation.

My first problem was that the movie was really disjointed. It didn't flow well and was very cluttered. The script wasn't very good either. A lot of the dialogue was awkward and uncharacteristic. I expected to love Four and Tris as I did in the book, however, in the movie Peter was my favorite character, someone I loathed and despised in the book. I enjoyed the humor he added but it was much too uncharacteristic.

Shailene and Ansel's acting was on point. The acting overall was great. It was the script and directing that ruined the movie for me. Too many liberties were taken and the story was changed drastically. In the movie, there was a never a box, Tris just underwent experiments. Many minor, but important, characters were taken out or overshadowed. For example, I was so excited when I heard that Uriah was cast for Insurgent. I had loved him in the book but he had about 3 lines and then just died in the movie. Marlene had no lines, but when she died in the movie, the audience is supposed to feel sad. Christina had a much bigger role in the book. Her conflict and anger towards Tris was supposed to isolate her. Tris showed no real regret for killing Will and her PTSD was overshadowed. Tori, again, had about 2 lines and served no purpose. She was supposed to kill Jeanine, not Four's mom-sister. On that note, the actress chosen to play Evelyn was a terrible choice. Her acting was great, but she looks much too young to play Four's mother. When Evelyn came back into play, it was supposed to be a big deal. Not just "oh yeah, btw my mom's actually alive."

Another thing that really bothered me was the head-massager-face-scanning-things. You can't tell what a person's faction is by scanning their face. Factions are a choice, not something genetic. And no one is just 10% divergent. Either you're divergent or you're not.

If I hadn't read the books, I'm sure I would have really liked the movie. However, being a big fan of the series, this movie ruined the book. I was really frustrated and while I enjoyed watching it in the theater with my friends, it probably won't be as good the second time.

Rebel Belle

I'm not completely sure where this is was set in but I do know that it takes place somewhere in the South.

2. Discovery on the streets of New York - A little known book you found while browsing and ended up loving?

City of Bones

Obviously City of Bones isn't a little known book, but I had to choose this or a little known book that I didn't find while browsing (my dad gave it to me) and since I want to keep that book my little secret I chose this. I was just browsing Barnes & Nobles when I found City of Bones. I hadn't heard of it before but I ended up loving it.


3. Swearing off social media - A book you refuse to read?

Crescendo

I'm someone who strongly believes in giving books a chance, even if it's something that sounds awful, so there aren't many books that I won't read. However, that's mainly my philosophy for standalones or first books in a series. Crescendo is the second book in the Hush Hush series. I read the first book and absolutely hated it; the plot was horrible, the characters annoying, and the love interest was a creep, so I definitely won't be reading the second book.

4. Beginnings on TV into film - A series that gets  better with each installment?

Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Daughter of Smoke & Bone is one of my all-time favorite series. All of the books are amazing and they really do get better with each installment.

5. The Oscar trip - A book/series that hit a snag?

The Selection

I enjoyed The Selection but the other two books weren't my favorite. I got very annoyed by the main characters and it was too romance heavy for me.

6. Jlaw and Chris Martin - Favorite book by a collaboration of authors?

My True Love Game To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories

This was such a fun book! There are 12 different authors and while I didn't like a few of the stories this was definitely a great collaboration.

7. Work with David O. Rusell - Dysfunction character you can't help but love?

No clue.

8. Mystique - A villain who thinks they're doing what's right?

Valentine Morgenstern is the villain of the first three books in the Mortal Instruments. I thought he was a great villain and he really did believe that he was doing what's right because of what happened in his past.

9. The Hunger Games - Favorite high profile series?

Divergent

Divergent is another one of my favorite series. It's so interesting and I love the characters!

10. Everything she's ever said - Favorite comedic/snarky character?

Top Ten Most Owned Authors!

Hello!

So today I'm going to the Top Ten Most Owned Authors Tag that's been circling around Booktube.

10. Agatha Christie

I own After the Funeral, Dead Man's Folly, The Moving Finger, and Murder on the Orient Express. I haven't read any of Christie's books in a while nor do I plan buying anymore of her books but what I have read I've really enjoyed.

9. Tahereh Mafi

I LOOOVE the Shatter me series soso much. I also have the novellas but I've lent it out to a friend. I can't wait for Tahereh to right more books.

8. Veronica Roth

The Divergent series is one of my all time favorite series and I definitely plan on buying more books if Veronica writes anymore.

I own An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, Looking for Alaska, and The Fault in Our Stars. I own pretty much all his books that he's written on his own and I seriously cannot wait for him to right more.

Ellen Hopkins is one of my favorite authors of all time. I have Impulse, Perfect, Crank, Glass, and Tricks. I didn't really like Crank and Glass but the others were AMAZING. I really need to buy the rest of her books.

I have the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and I realllllllly want to buy the Heroes of Olympus series. I have read them but I don't own them.

I haven't read the Chronicles of Narnia in a very long time but I remember I loved it.

This is a pretty obvious choice. I remember I really enjoyed this series but I haven't reread it since the last book came out.

At number two I have the 9 books of The Shadowhunter Chronicles are sooo good. I love love love Cassandra Clare. I'm so excited for her new books. The Iron Trial comes out it 3 days! I'll basically buy any of her books without hesitation.

And coming up at number one I have all 13 of A Series of Unfortunate Events and Who Could That Be at This Hour? (not pictured). A Series of Unfortunate Events was my childhood and I just love the series so much. Who Could That Be at This Hour?, however, was just not for me. It's more suited for a younger audience.
